Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty ("Tummy Tuck")

Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck is the surgical removal of the excess of skin and fat from the abdominal wall. The aim with the complex surgery is a flatter and firmer abdomen.

A flat and well-toned abdomen is something many people strive for through exercise and weight control. Having children or undergoing large weight changes could lead to excess skin and fat on the abdomen. Even though, many find themselves with excess of skin and fat on the abdomen, which is impossible to rid of. Besides surgical removal of that excess of fat and skin the laxity of underlying muscles are often tightened. We usually also include liposculpture as part of the procedure to further improve the shape.

However, abdominoplasty is not a substitute for weight loss or an appropriate exercise program!

Women or men have varying reasons for their wishes to have an abdominalplasty performed. Some of them are;

  • Feelings of self-consciousness,
  • Embarrassment or shyness due to abdominal appearance,
  • Rashes below the skin-fold on the abdomen,
  • Back discomfort or pain (due to separated muscles on the abdominal wall),
  • Inability to exercise and play sport due to the size of the abdomen,
  • Difficulties related to clothing due to imbalance in body proportions.

The best candidates for a tummy tuck are patients who are in good shape with loose abdominal skin. We do not operate people that are classified as fat. Smokers are urged to stop smoking during the healing process to avoid problems during the healing process.

If there is a fat accumulation on the abdominal wall, especially along the upper part and over the hips, liposculpture will be required as part of the surgery to remove the layer of fatty tissue between the skin and the muscles. Note that fatty tissue inside the abdomen is not removed in any form, and the final results depends much upon the amount of pressure against the abdominal wall made of fatty tissue from the inside. Besides that even though results of the surgery are long lasting any surgical procedure may not be permanent. Bad lifestyles with gain of weight and futures pregnancies will negatively affect the final result.  Women who are planning future pregnancies may be advised to wait, as the vertical muscles in the abdomen that are tightened during surgery will separate again during subsequent pregnancies.

The surgical procedure generally takes about 2-3 hours. The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. Excess of skin and fat are removed, together with tightening of the vertical muscles of the abdominal wall. A new opening is made for the belly button at the right position. For some days thin tubes will temporarily be placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect.

Following the surgery, dressings and bandages will be applied to the cover the incisions, and the patient will be wrapped in an elastic bandage. One week after surgery most of this is removed and the patients should wear a compression garment to minimize swelling and to support the abdomen as it heals. In the end you will end up with a long scar from one hip to the other placed as low as possible on the abdominal wall. A round scarring will also be visible around the belly button. Besides that the sensation in the lower part of the abdominal skin will be impaired.
