Plastic surgery

Plastic surgery is a medical specialty concerned with the correction or restoration of form and function. While famous for aesthetic surgery, plastic surgery also includes many types of reconstructive surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, and the treatment of burns. The word "plastic" derives from the Greek “plastikos” meaning to mould or to shape; its use here is not connected with the synthetic polymer material known as plastic.

Aesthetic surgery

A part of the plastic surgical speciality is given the unspecific name “Cosmetic medicine”. It is also named “aesthetic surgery”. This part of the medicine involves surgical and medical techniques intended to modify or improve the appearance of a physical feature, irregularity, or defect. More specific it is dealing with reconstruction of cutaneous or underlying tissues, performed to improves and correct a structural defect or to remove a scar, birthmark, or normal evidence of ageing. Its goal is to enhance it beyond the average level toward some aesthetic ideal.

Cosmetic surgery

In medicine there is nothing called "cosmetic surgery". Any plastic surgery should only be performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, and preferably a surgeon who is a member of aestetic plastic surgeons.

The risk and complication of plastic surgery

No surgical procedure is risk free, but fortunately, in the hands of a skilled surgeon, complications are seldom and usually correctable. The choices your plastic surgeon takes should do several things to reduce your chances of unwanted results.

We truly want to be honest with you as a patient! There are ALWAYS side effects connected to every surgical procedure.

To sum up in few sentences’:

  • All surgical procedures leaves scares. However a plastic surgeon, uses natural wrinkles and lines of the body to hide the scares, these will over time become less visible.
  • Ageing is impossible to stop, and this means that surgical procedures under taken will have a limited effect over time, but can “re wind” some things one’s own life style has left.
  • All humans have their own unique heritage (genes). These will influence individual lives in both a positive and negative way. Surgery cannot change this fact.

We at Northern Light Hospital have documentation for a complication rate of 0,03 %. (bleeding, infections or problems with healing of a scar).
